The Lumberyard: A Radio Magazine of Poetry, Prose, and Music

Volume 3, Episode #6 Contents:

This week on The Lumberyard we remember the life and works of ALEXANDER "SANDY" TAYLOR--poet, publisher, and educator--who died in December 2007 at the age of 76. Taylor was the founder and co-director of Curbstone Press in Willimantic, CT, and a leading light in the world of independent publishing. Sandy and his wife Judith Ayer Doyle founded Curbstone in 1975 as a vehicle for poets and writers whose works embraced issues of social awareness, human rights, and peace. Curbstone, which continues to publish under the direction of Judith Doyle, is internationally renowned for its work, and has inspired several other independent presses dedicated to social justice.

In addition to publishing, Sandy was a teacher of English for over thirty years, a prolific translator of Danish literature, and a poet whose own works were published in English, Danish, Bulgarian and Serbo-Croatian during his lifetime. This week, we'll hear Sandy reading poems from his book Dreaming at the Gates of Fury, published by Azul Editions, as well as clips from a conversation recorded at WHUS in August 2006.

Musical features:
LYS GUILLORN: "When I Was a Tiger Lily"
THE BOWERBIRDS: "Human Hands"
CHAINSAW PAWS: "summerwith"
